Ablaze, 2014-15
The inspiration for this series developed during a trip to Europe. Amidst all the artistic grandeur there, I was drawn most to the mystery, simplicity, movement and emotion that I encountered in many 19th century landscape paintings. I have joyfully pursued these qualities in my own work by expressing my vision through emotive nuances of colour and luminosity.
An unlikely pairing of fire and water reveals how opposing forces can interact and co-exist in visual harmony. Integrating a surrealist concept with a luminist inspired visual expression brought forth a painting that appears both mysterious and familiar, both imagined and realistic. On a deeper level this painting also alludes to the dualities in life that can occur simultaneously; those experiences, sights, and feelings we occasionally grapple with that defy articulation or category.

"[Paintings] appeal not to that faculty in man of getting to the bottom of things, but to his consciousness of the mystery all about him- the undefinable, impenetrable, limitlessness of spirit" ~ Charles H Caffin
